Hi John-sorry about delay in responding so I will answer the easy part first --not aware re Peter Laszlo at UTS I think u will find it was elsewhere near Broadway -- Vlad may know---- the actual date for style commencing at UTS Alan has I understand already advised(1973 - add by J.C.). I started instructing UTS in 1974 till abt 1981 (last year or so shared with Graeme I think-longggg time ago) then Larry Goncalves had it for abt 12 months then Graeme Snowden both nights and lastly Ben Coogan 1988 – 2001, the club was a consistently strong one and a chap called Alex Tui (http://www.fighting-fathers.com/interviews/Alex/alex-1.htm--we knew him as Marfu) trained there under Graeme for some years. I sparred with him in a park at Doonside many years ago. He later gained fame as Australia’s first professional kick boxing world champion. Another student Vic Cherikoff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vic_Cherikoff) achieved a 2nd kyu and has since gained fame by writing several cookbooks on indigenous food and is considered an authority on the subject.
Clubs existed at various times (1973-2001-either as Szlagowski Karate or Shizen Ryu Karate) usually in community or school halls as follows
Alan Thomas 1973 onwards) UTS-Broadway, Merrylands, Burwood, NSW Police Academy and Parkes (1988) & soon at St Clair Barry Clarke at (70’ s 80’s 90’s) Doonside, Whalan, Werrington, Tregear and Caboolture Qld Ken Chamberlain (1974-1997) UTS-Broadway, (very briefly) Parramatta Leagues Club (with Tony Gerzina), Guildford, Quakers Hill, Werrington, Emu Plains Blacktown TAFE Hilario Goncalves (70’s onwards) UTS, WA (Safety Bay) and Darwin Tony Gerzina (70’s) Wentworthville Barry Taylor (80’s 90’s) Castle Hill and Qld David Young (70’s-90’s) Safety Bay, Western Australia Marty Breed-Victoria(90’s) Geoff Craig (90’s) Ku-ring-gai TAFE and Castle Hill, Ben Coogan UTS – 1988 – 2001. Neville Halib (graded by Alan but received further Dan gradings from Wally at the Park) Merrylands and Granville (70’s & 80’s)
Also in Darwin is the school established by Hilario Goncalves (now taught as Okinawan Karate Do Shizenkan under Andrew Andreou) ---in a like manner to Kym Reid these people have direct lineage to Wally in that Hilario was graded at the Park by Wally and other seniors such as George, Russell and Vlad. Andrew was graded to Shodan in 1995 by Barry Clarke, myself, Hilario and David Young.
PS: OOPS FORGOT 2=== KEN FORRSTRUM (1980s) St Marys and Regentville (not sure where Ken taught after this time )
GRAEME SNOWDON (1980-1988) UTS Broadway
